iPhone 5

iPhone 5: a little bit taller, a little bit baller

And if you've got a girl, you can call her. On LTE.

"iPhone 5: The biggest thing to happen to iPhone since iPhone," says Apple, setting the bar high for its newest smartphone. Rumors and speculation about the sixth-generation phone began about 4.2 seconds after the introduction of the iPhone 4S last October, but the iPhone 5 has now landed in our grubby little hands. It's thinner. It's lighter. And it's—taller.
Apple brought plenty of improvements to the iPhone this year: the company designed an entirely new processor, there's a new camera, and the phone now supports 4G LTE data speeds. iOS 6 was just rolled out in conjunction with the iPhone 5 release and features its own significant upgrades (read our review of iOS 6 for more details on what's new).
Are these and other changes enough? We hope to help you answer that question with this review. So strap on those fairy wings from your Halloween box in the back of the closet; we're about to get "magical."

Screen size doesn't matter. Or does it?

iPhone 4S on the left, iPhone 5 on the right.
As rumored, the iPhone 5 has a larger screen than all of its predecessors from Apple. Since 2007, Apple has produced iPhones with a 3.5 inch (measured diagonally) screen. But in the sixth generation of the design, Apple has bumped the screen size up to 4 inches diagonally, giving it a 16:9 aspect ratio ideal for widescreen movies and many games.
The iPhone 5's 1136×640 screen features the same "retina" class pixel density as the iPhone 4S—326 pixels per inch. Though images on the iPhone 5 should look just as sharp as those on the iPhone 4 and 4S, Apple claims that the iPhone 5 has 44 percent more color saturation, making photos, icons, videos, games, and other elements appear more vivid.
iPhone 5 on the left, iPhone 4S on the right. The visible difference in color saturation is very slight.
Colors did appear a bit more saturated on the iPhone 5 when directly compared against the iPhone 4S, but the difference was slight. When viewed independently, it's hard to see a noticeable difference.
The slightly taller screen has other benefits, largely in the form of more screen real estate for your home screen and for apps. Apple pointed out at its September media event that the iPhone 5's home screen now fits five rows of icons instead of just four—a minor point, but still much appreciated by those of us who experience icon claustrophobia.
iPhone 5 screenshot on the left, iPhone 4S screenshot on the right. When browsing the Web (or any content), you can now fit more on the screen.
The larger screen also means that you can see slightly more of the Web when using Safari and a bit more text when reading an e-book; you can also watch widescreen movies at full size (well, "full size" for a 4-inch screen) without black bars on the top or bottom. In my testing, this proved surprisingly useful. I hadn't expected the ability to read a few more words or see just a bit more of a list (see above screenshots) to matter much, but I liked it quite a bit.
Developers are now updating their apps to take advantage of the larger screen—many apps already have updates in the App Store. If your favorite apps haven't been updated yet, Apple centers them in the middle of the iPhone 5 screen with a basic black bar on the top and bottom. Instagram is one such app that has yet to be updated; here's how it looks on the iPhone 5 screen right now:
Apps (such as Instagram) that aren't yet updated for the iPhone 5's larger screen get centered with black bars at the top and bottom.
Android fans who like even larger screens may be disappointed by the fact that the iPhone 5 isn't bigger, but let's be honest: Apple was never likely to wander down the path that leads to phone/tablet hybrids with the iPhone. Instead, a smaller version of the iPad may be in the works (an announcement is still expected for October 2012).
That hasn't stopped the Internet from teasing Apple over its decision to release a taller iPhone. Tall phone is tall! But in practice, it works. Other iPhone buyers may like it as I do; at worst, they may feel neutral about it. But it's hard to see many people actively disliking the screen.

Galaxy S III

Apple iPhone 5 vs Samsung Galaxy S III
It’s the battle between the flagships! Two handsets enter, only one can leave claiming supremacy in the smartphone landscape. For a good while now, Samsung’s pride and joy in the Galaxy S III has been tearing up the scene, and when the Apple iPhone 5 finally became a reality, Samsung made sure to let everyone know that “the next big thing is already here.” Talking the talk, we’re taking these two hotshot smartphones and pitting them against one another, to unequivocally proclaim which device reigns supreme amongst the two.

Design:

Visibly seeing a huge size disparity between the two, the iPhone 5 is undoubtedly easier to grasp in the hand, seeing that it’s lighter in weight, skinnier in frame, and not as cumbersome to hold in the hand as the Galaxy S III. In addition, it’s quite evident that the iPhone 5 is the more premium looking device between the two, as it sports a brushed aluminum rear casing and a sturdier construction. However, there’s no doubt in our mind that the Samsung Galaxy S III would probably handle a fall a lot better than its rival – mainly because its plastic body wouldn’t be as badly beaten up.

Below their displays, there are physical buttons that get us back to their respective homescreens – though, one is raised while the other is recessed. Nevertheless, there’s not one that’s more advantageous since the necessary tactile responses are there.

Looking around the sides of both handsets, they share many common elements – like their 3.5mm headset jacks, microphones, power buttons, and volume controls. However, the Samsung Galaxy S III employs a more universally favored microUSB port, which offers video-out with the aid of an MHL adapter, while the iPhone 5 sticks to Apple’s newer proprietary Lightning docking port.

Sizing up evenly to one another, these flagships bear the same count 8-megapixel auto-focus cameras with LED flash, both of which can shoot 1080p videos of course. Meanwhile, Apple’s beauty sports a front-facing 1.3-megapixel snapper, while there’s a 1.9-megapixel one on the Galaxy S III. So far, it looks like an even match, but we’ll compare the qualities of the two a bit later on.

Display:

After spending some time meticulously detailing their intricacies, it’s still a difficult call on which device has the better display. With the Samsung Galaxy S III’s 4.7-inch HD 720 x 1280 Super AMOLED display, we love it for its larger size and saturated colors, while the iPhone 5’s 4-inch 640 x 1136 Retina Display wins for its better visibility outdoors and exceptionally accurate colors. Sure, the Retina Display of the iPhone 5 coughs up the higher pixel density of 326 ppi, versus the 306 ppi figure with the SGSIII, but in all honesty, it’s negligible since they’re both soundly detailed. Since they both flaunt great viewing angles, it ultimately comes down to colors for this one. Being an AMOLED panel, the SGSIII exhibits cooler tones that tend to cast a bluish hue to the color white, while the iPhone 5 produces colors that are very natural in tone – so it’s simply a matter of preference.

Electronics RIM unveils five new touch-screen BlackBerry smart phones Aug 3, 2011 12:15 PM Research In Motion today revealed that it is launching five new BlackBerry smart phones with touch screens, which are expected to debut later this month. RIM is updating three BlackBerry Bold models and two BlackBerry Torch models. All five phones will run BB OS 7, the company’s new operating system. The BlackBerry Bold 9900 and 9930 are RIM’s thinnest smart phones ever, each offering a keyboard and touch display. The BlackBerry Torch 9810 features a 3.2” touch display and a slide-out keyboard. The BlackBerry Torch 9850 and 9860 introduce 3.7”, all-touch displays, the largest on BlackBerry smart phones to date. AT&T said it would launch the BlackBerry Torch 9810 later this month, with the Torch 9860 and a Bold 9900 models expected to launch later this year. The new phones come at a time when RIM’s sales have been dwindling. Last month, a Nielsen survey found that BlackBerry phones account for 21 percent of all smart phone sales, lagging in third behind touch-screen makers Android (38 percent) and iPhone (27 percent). Furthermore, the survey found that out of consumers who had purchased a smart phone in the past three months, BlackBerry’s market share dropped from 11 percent in February to only 6 percent in June. Check out Consumer Reports' smart phone Ratings (available to subscribers) to find out how the latest models—including the current Blackberry Bold 9650, Blackberry Bold 9780 and Blackberry Torch 9800—performed in our tests. Samsung Galaxy S III to be an amphibious phone? Ok, so back in January, we reported the floating rumours about Samsung planning a waterproof Galaxy S III and apparently, even the iPhone would follow suit. That time, it was a company called HZO that was supposed to bring about this wizardry to mobile phones. The latest tip this time comes from a independent phone retailer in the UK who claims the next version will indeed have a water proof coating, only this time it will be from Liquipel. No more bulky water proof phones! No more bulky water proof phones! Liquipel wowed everyone at CES 2012, at their booth when they demoed a HTC Thunderbolt running just fine, even after being submerged in water. What’s even more impressive is when the guy demoing phone just pulls off the battery cover and submerges it once again. Liquipel currently offers this coating technology directly to end-users as well via a main-in program. This is currently in the US only and will cost you anywhere between $60 and $80, per device. It works by coating the innards of the phone or tablet with a near-invisible compound that resists almost any liquid and moisture. The device can still work submerged for several meters under water and for extended periods of time, too. The main idea, however, is to protect the gadget from accidental drops in the water or in the monsoon season. An insider also claimed that the iPhone 5 will also be getting this treatment. While this does seem a bit unlikely given how Apple likes to take their time in releasing new technology, it wouldn’t hurt to have it. This is all speculation right now, and we’ll only know for sure once Samsung unveils it and unfortunately, we have to wait a little a longer than MWC, this time, as they’ve decided to unveil it at their own event, later. While that is a bummer, we could take it as a good sign, as a separate event could mean Samsung really has something spectacular in the works (*fingers crossed*).

Nokia 700

Nokia 700 Review

We’ve got tiny smartphones and then we have the Nokia 700 - the tiniest of them all. This one comes with Belle on board. Nokia is slowly gaining mileage with their WP7 phones – more with the Lumia 710, than the Lumia 800, but they’ve still not abandoned ship with the Symbian ones. Does the Nokia 700 justify that decision? Let’s find out.
From all sides
From all sides

Features and Performance
Design and Build Quality
Just three words can describe the Nokia 700 – slim, tiny and compact. It’s one of the tiniest smartphones we’ve ever held in our hands. Don’t let the spec sheet showing a 3.2-inch screen fool you out here, because it’s more screen area lengthwise than breadthwise. So, the 700 will feel much tinier than say, a similar 3.2-inch screen that the SE Live with Walkman sports. It’s quite similar to the Xperia Ray, in terms of looks, but yet the Xperia felt slightly bigger in our hands.
Looks good?
It's not a slider

The top consists of the 3.5mm headphone jack, a microSD card slot and Nokia’s proprietary charging port. The right consists of the lock button, a volume rocker and a dedicated camera button. The front consists of the 3.2-inch ClearBlack nHD display with an ambient light sensor and a proximity sensor on top and three physical buttons at the bottom. The back has the 5 mp shooter and an LED flash. The microSD card is located beneath the battery, so there’s no hot swapping feature.
Connectivity ports on top
Connectivity ports on top

This one is delicate, there’s a lot of plastic involved, and disappointingly it doesn’t have the same aluminium build that we saw on the Nokia 701. The design is good, but Nokia could have definitely done better with the build quality of the phone.

Interface
The 700 is powered by a 1GHz CPU with Nokia’s Belle operating system. We first came across their improved OS with the Nokia 701 and we quite liked it. It’s zippy, quick and lag-free. Also, there’s quite a bit of customization available for the home screen and the overall layout of the phone. Oh, and it’s borrowed some stuff from Android as well, with the most prominent one being the drop down notification bar.
The interface
The interface

Though navigation is well covered, typing deserves a special mention for the 700. The small screen size makes it almost impossible for you to type smoothly on the phone. So much so that we wouldn’t be surprised if you’d have a special game with your friends as to who makes the most mistakes, while typing. The ‘longer’ screen makes sure that it’s more difficult to type in portrait mode. Social integration has been done well, but say you’re one of those Twitter addicts, then again typing becomes a major issue.
Social networking integration
Social networking integration

Media
The media interface sports a similar look to the one we saw on the Nokia 701, and there’s a bunch of preset equalizers as well. The phone supports MP4, H.263 and H.264 video formats and MP3, WAV, еAAC+ and WMA audio formats. We didn’t get a pair of headphones with our review unit, but the 700 drivers proved to be pretty good on our test headphones. The loudspeaker is good enough for personal listening.
720p video playback is possible, but the phone was unable to playback the 1080p files we tried on it. We scouted the app store for some third party players, but that didn’t yield any success, either. Anyway, the 16:9 aspect ratio does tend to make this phone a better viewing device than the other phones with a similar 3.2-inch screen.
Media options
Media options

Connectivity
The 700 is a quad-band phone and is well loaded with connectivity options. There’s 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 3.0, GPS and NFC. In call quality is decent and the loudspeaker works quite well. The problems started with the browser. Firstly, full flash videos don’t load properly and secondly even slightly image heavy web pages take some crazy amount of time to render. We tried a full range of phones from this spot, but the 700 was the slowest of them all. GPS works fine, though. For your business purposes and e-mail attachments, there’s no dedicated office editing application and you’ll have to purchase QuickOffice, if you need to do any kind of editing.

On video: Nokia 700

We’d done a separate article on our experience with NFC on Nokia handsets, so you can check that out here. However, if that’s too much of a read, we’ll briefly explain it in a nutshell. NFC has potential, but it’s still in the nascent stage. You wouldn’t really want to pay premium money just to tap and connect to a pair of speakers, or get a few extra levels in Angry Birds. Also, the chances that you’ll use it extensively with another Nokia NF- enabled smartphone are quite slim.
Connectivity options
Connectivity options

Misc. Features
Besides the usual recorder, calculator apps that are present on most smartphones, the 700 comes with a few apps like E! and CNN video. However, the more useful ones are the video and photo editor. It’s nothing extra-ordinary, but it’s good to know there’s something to play around with. The app store is extremely limited in comparison to the Android or the iOS store, so you’ll have to make do with that limitation.
The Misc apps
The Misc apps

Camera
Nokia has always got good camera sensors on all its smart phones, so we expected the same out of the 700. However, it’s more of a mixed bag out here, because though the 5 megapixel camera dishes out some neat pictures, it’s not autofocus. Outdoor snaps did come out quite well, but we did have focusing issues with the fixed focus camera.Macro shots are extremely difficult to shoot and you’ll just be lucky, if you can get the camera to focus onto the subject at close range. The LED flash does help to shoot some decent low light snaps.
Outdoor snaps are good, but no autofocus
Outdoor snaps are good, but no autofocus

In terms of video recording, the phone does 720p, but it does suffer from some colour banding, just like the other phone cameras, we’ve reviewed earlier.

Battery Life
The 700 comes with a 1080 mAh battery to power the ClearBlack AMOLED screen. Under normal usage, we could get about three fourth of a days usage on the phone, satisfactory, at best. In our video loop test, the phone stood up for six hours straight, while it cranked up seven hours and twenty minutes in our standard test. One and a half hour calling, two hours of video, two hours of audio, and one and a half hours of streaming via Wi-Fi. Overall, the 700 has an average battery life.
Worth a buy?
Worth a buy?

Verdict
The Nokia 700 is priced at Rs.16,500 (MOP). That’s one hell of a price, considering the Nokia Lumia 710 is selling for a grand cheaper. In a similar price range, you’ve got a range of pretty good Androids also – the Neo V, the DEFY+, the Xperia Active, all of which are just about a grand expensive. Alternatively, there’s a better option for a cheaper price tag – the Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman. As far as the 700 is concerned, it’s back to the drawing board for Nokia. We’d definitely not recommend you buying this one at this price point.
